What is the Triple Vagal Method (TVM) and How Does It Work?
In my practice, I work with the principles and techniques of the Triple Vagal Method (TVM) — a gentle yet powerful approach that focuses on the vagus nerve and its impact on the autonomic nervous system.
The vagus nerve is a two-part nerve that runs from the brain down to the gut, connecting and influencing all of the body’s major systems along the way. It plays a central role in how we respond to stress, how we rest, and how we connect with others.
Using a combination of specific and intuitive touch, TVM helps tap into the deep, subconscious connection between mind and body. This can support your body in releasing tension, calming stress responses, and returning to a more balanced and regulated state.
The word “Triple” refers to the three states of consciousness that the vagus nerve helps to regulate:
- Ventral Vagal – This is the state where we feel safe, connected, curious, and at ease.
- Sympathetic – When we sense threat or danger, we enter the “fight or flight” state. The body releases adrenaline and cortisol to help us respond — a healthy survival mechanism, but one that can take a toll if it stays active for too long.
- Dorsal Vagal – If stress continues without relief, we may move into “freeze” or “shutdown.” This is a deeper form of withdrawal, often felt as numbness, exhaustion, or disconnection.
TVM helps guide the body and nervous system back through these states, supporting a natural reset and bringing us back to a sense of calm, balance, and well-being.

Your session with Sally
The session can be enjoyed in your own home or at Sally’s house in Cambridge. There is no set routine or timing as every session is specifically tailored to the needs of the individual. The whole treatment will take approx. 60 – 90 minutes.
Sally will explain TVM theory in more detail and ask a few questions about your physical and emotional health. You are welcome to discuss any thoughts and concerns. The healing is done by accessing gentle pressure points with your full consent. You will firstly be invited to lie on your back and then possibly on your side or front. Alternative positions can be used for pregnant women. There will be periods of relaxation integrated into the sequence of bodywork.
Please wear soft comfortable attire especially around the chest, abdomen and hips. Pressure can be applied over clothing or skin to skin if preferred. Please come with an openness to explore your own individual experience. Afterwards there is time to debrief and discuss your session. Guidelines are given for possible outcomes and selfcare.
From more information on the modality please check out the Integrated Somatic Institute website.
Sally is the first practitioner to combine the Triple Vagal Method with Breathwork. If you would like to try this unique combination of somatic bodywork with breathing, do ask for more information.
